The worm-drive portable circular saw was invented in 1923 by Edmond Michel. In 1924 Michel formed a partnership with Joseph Sullivan, and together they started the Michel Electric Handsaw Company, with the sole purpose of manufacturing and marketing the saw invented by Michel. The company later renamed itself Skilsaw Inc., Portable circular saws are often still called Skilsaws or Skil saws. Its successor is still sold by Skil as the model 77. To get around the Skil patents, Art Emmons of Porter-Cable invented the direct-drive sidewinder saw in 1928. Recently smaller cordless circular saws with rechargeable batteries have become popular. Walter Taylor of Southampton had the blockmaking contract for Portsmouth Dockyard. In about 1762 he built a saw mill where he roughed out the blocks. This was replaced by another mill in 1781. Descriptions of his machinery there in the 1790s show that he had circular saws. Taylor patented two other improvements to blockmaking but not the circular saw.[4] This suggests either that he did not invent it or that he published his invention without patenting it (which would mean it was no longer patentable). Builders generally choose a saw and blade type according to the composition of the metal, the size of the material and the desired characteristics of cut. A good jigsaw (my favorite is the Milwaukee with a nice speed control) and you can follow any line, even a straight rip cut. The higher end jig saws have very low vibrations and tend to make very controlable cuts. A straight rip through a 2x4 is very doable. One issue, the more expensive jig saws tend to have 1.25" stroke, so you either cut both sides at once (and jig saws are bad at this because blades flex) or you get a very short blade (or cut down one you have).

OK, I am looking for a best answer here. Yes, you can cut metal with a hand held skill saw. You want a fine carbine tooth blade if posible and a regular saw blade will not work. Use atleast a 24 tooth but a 40 tooth is best. That is for a 7 1/4" saw. But to do so, it takes patience. You cannot cut it like wood. It takes me about ,,, I'd say 3 or 4 minutes to slowly cut a piece of 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle iron. If you force it or bind it at all, you with break the teeth and I am here to tell you, 40 pieces of tungsten flying off a saw all in a split second is not a good thing to be around. It's dang near like a grenade going off. I have had to dig metal out of my arms that were probably a quarter inch deep. You can do it, but if you are not pretty much an expert with a skill saw, I suggest not doing it. If you do, wear welding gloves, long sleve shirt'ssss, saftey glasses and a face shield. This is really something best left to the people that know what they are doing and there isn't even a lot of good carpenters that can do it. I am not trying to put myself on a pedestal or anything. I just have a nack for doing what cann't be done. When working in dim work spaces the DCS373L2 includes a bright LED light with a 20-second delay. Since making precise cuts in metal an be tricky because of hard to see sigh lines; this saw includes DeWalt's proprietary Multi-Coated SIGHT-LINE window that provides maximum abrasion resistance for a clear view of the cut. A high strength steel shoe ensures durability and also offers resistance against chip build-up and there is a lightweight magnesium upper guard. We like that other creature comforts such as rubber over molded grip handles and easy to adjust depth and bevel leavers are standard.

serious tool. I haven't really put it through testing (yet), I'll update when I do that. For some quick straight cuts in 18ga cold rolled sheet it was fast and easy, clean line with a straight edge. Chips come off hot, fast and furious and go everywhere, so if like me you tend not to think about face and arm protection, this beast will remind you! It's another tool for cutting mostly metal, but I got a couple wood blades for it and does a nice job with that too. This would probably be my least favorite choice when it comes to a metal cutting saw. It is basically just a hacksaw on steroids for want of a better description. Don't get me wrong these are high quality saws, but when used on metal they are a pretty rough weapon of choice. It is made by Kawasaki and is one tough machine. This one comes with a side handle which gives you more control and allows you to exercise a great deal more power.
