This would probably be my least favorite choice when it comes to a metal cutting saw. It is basically just a hacksaw on steroids for want of a better description. Don't get me wrong these are high quality saws, but when used on metal they are a pretty rough weapon of choice.

However when it comes to having to cut metal on a regular basis, then doing it manually is both time consuming and a lot of hard work. A hacksaw can make its way through most metals with a good blade on it, but we all know the usual problems of sticking and hacking (hence the name) our way through tougher metals. Obviously it's good to see a tool like the Bosch GST25 M in action, particularly against another jigsaw. For this test we're comparing the GST25 M with the excellent Bosch GST140 (see it in action here). We fitted the same metal cutting blade in both jigsaws, and set both to pendulum action 1.

Jigsaws are increasingly being used for cutting harder materials, metal in particular. Obviously, though, cutting metal requires not only the correct blade, but a jigsaw with the power needed to perform the cut accurately and safely. COPYRIGHT 2018 DEWALT. It welds great, but I need to come up with a better system for cutting. I also need to make some rip cuts and my horizontal bandsaw won't do for that. I know you can use a regular circular saw to cut it, but I'm not sure what the preferred setup is.

The blade in the GST 25M will only travel 24mm, this in turn reduces vibration, one of the key factors that makes cutting metal with a jigsaw so tricky. The last thing you want when cutting metal is the vibration from the blade causing the saw to jump all over the place. Shorter stroke length equates to greater control, less vibration. You have received several responses re: cutting metal with a circular saw, and it can be done with the right set-up, right blade, and right techniques. You can also lose a finger real quick if you aren't careful.

The circular saw was invented around the end of the 18th century as a rip-saw to convert logs into lumber in sawmills and various claims have been made as to who invented the circular saw. Before the design was invented logs were sawn by hand using a pit saw or using powered saws in a sawmill using an up-and-down saw with a reciprocating motion. The rotary nature of the circular saw requires more power to operate but cuts faster because the teeth are in constant motion. The sound of the circular saw is different from the sound of an up-and-down saw and earned it the nickname buzz-saw.

But looking a little more closely at the metal cutting circular saws might give us some insight about why Milwaukee, Makita, and others haven't produced 7-1/4-inch metal cutting blades but instead have created a new tool. Let me draw your attention to the saw's lower RPMs, smaller blade, and overall design.

The easiest way to understand these is to think of a large hacksaw mounted on a table that is automatically powered. They can also cut angles and can easily get through even the toughest of metals. They are a specialist type of machine so they will only be needed by the actual industry. We cut a ton of aluminum at work using circular saws, using non ferrous carbide tipped blades on 7 1/4" saws. (Makita for the most part) For trimming, shaving and cutting thinner sheet I just run the blade dry, it's easier and less to clean up. For cutting thicker sections I'll use Walter cool cut. (that's what they supply and it keeps the blades from over heating proloning there life ) When you buying a blade look for one with a raker to it, straight tooth blades just do not cut as well.

I've done a lot of metal work and strongly recommend an angle grinder with a cutting disk. It is fast, safe and will cut fairly straight without too much trouble. I use air shears for sheet metal usually but then you would need a compressor et al. I still have my first angle grinder (dewalt) and continue to use it. This is very like the chop saw above and again all you need to do is change out the blade. Both chop saws and circular saws are available in corded or cordless, so it is your preference as to which suits your own needs best. The one we show in the picture is a heavy duty circular saw which has been specifically designed for cutting through metal,

If you decide to use a drill to accomplish the task, it is prudent to know that drills are most of the time used with bits, rather than blades. Of course, in the case of hole saws, their teeth are very similar to other saw blades. The thicker and the coarser teeth have the ability to cut through softer material such as wood, and when you use the finer teeth, you will be able to cut through finer materials as well as heavy metals. Whenever you are trying to achieve the best cutting results, it is important to always drill at a very slow speed to accomplish the proper cutting that you are requiring. When you are in need of making very delicate cuts, such as curves, a jigsaw is an incredibly handy tool to accomplish this task. Friction is the main issue that is caused when you are working with stainless steel, and stainless heats up very quickly and when that happens the heat is transfered to the blade of the tool, which can then cause it to soften and break or even dull the tool. The first thing you will want to do is to find a fine toothed carbide steel blade that will not react to this heat too quickly. The next thing you will want to do is to make sure that you run the blade of the jigsaw at a slower pace, so that you can minimize this type of friction heating up. Do not force the blade and let it do the work for you so that you can keep from adding any extra friction to the metal and the blade.
