Sawmills first used smaller diameter circular saws to resaw dimension lumber such as lath and wall studs and for edging boards. As the technology advanced large diameter saw blades began to be used for the head saws and to cut clapboards. I just use my 7 1/4" Black and Decker saw with a carbide blade. If you have a carbide metal cutting blade you can cut some wood, but don't expect to run a woodworking shop with it, they are okay, I cut a lot of PVC pipe with mine here and they do good there, and really good with metal, not many sparks, but watch your eyes, lots of metal shards flying around and they are hot, I have a Milwaukee 6 inch battery metal cutting saw that I have cut through 3/8 inch stock in the shop and really nice clean cuts.. Milwaukee's M18 Fuel 7-1/4-inch circular saw has a no-load RPM of 5,000 whereas their new metal-cutting saw comes in at 3,900  and even that's a jump up from 3600 in their previous model. Makita boasts the same speed in their 18V LXT Brushless model. When you start getting into speeds as high as a wood cutting circular saw, you're getting beyond the recommended cutting speed when using carbide teeth in metal.
